The Challenge
The client is a global pharmaceutical company operating across a broad portfolio of therapeutic areas.
The monitoring programme covered five priority therapeutic segments, including cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, immunology and neuroscience.
At the beginning of the programme, AI search visibility was minimal. The early monitoring rounds showed only isolated appearances of the company, typically one or two mentions across the monitored answer set.
The objective was therefore to understand where the company appeared, which topics generated visibility, which sources AI systems relied on and how that position changed over time.
As visibility grew, the project expanded beyond monitoring into source analysis and technical GEO readiness of the company's own website.
The aim was not only to increase how often the company appeared in AI-generated answers, but also to strengthen the role of its own authoritative content within those answers.
The Baseline
Five AI search monitoring rounds were run over four months across five priority therapeutic segments.
The analysis covered:
- Brand mentions and Mention Rate.
- Presence across different therapeutic segments.
- Average position when the company appeared.
- Questions where the company was present or missing.
- First-party and third-party sources used in AI answers.
- Company-owned pages appearing as cited sources.
- Changes in visibility and citation patterns between monitoring rounds.
The early monitoring showed only isolated brand visibility and limited use of the company's own website as a source.
Each subsequent round was compared with the previous one, allowing the programme to track both brand presence and citation visibility as they developed.
What Was Done
1
Ran five rounds of AEO / GEO monitoring
The same priority therapeutic areas were monitored repeatedly over four months. The monitoring tracked where the company appeared, how frequently it was mentioned, which types of questions generated visibility and which sources were being used to construct the answers. This created a consistent baseline for measuring change rather than relying on a single snapshot.
2
Analysed visibility across five therapeutic segments
The monitoring was broken down by therapeutic area to identify where visibility was developing fastest and where further work was required. This showed that the company's AI search presence was not concentrated in a single topic. By the latest monitoring round, it was appearing across several of the monitored therapeutic segments. The segment-level analysis was then used to guide the next monitoring and optimisation priorities.
3
Analysed first-party and third-party citations
Our team reviewed the sources used across the monitored AI answers alongside the brand visibility data. This made it possible to distinguish between answers where the company was simply mentioned and answers where its own website was actively being used as supporting information. First-party citation visibility increased over the monitoring period, with company-owned pages appearing more frequently as sources in later rounds. The latest monitoring therefore showed improvement across two separate layers: the company was appearing in more AI-generated answers, while its own website was also beginning to contribute more directly to those answers.
4
Ran a technical Website GEO Readiness analysis
The company website was analysed specifically from the perspective of AI retrieval and citation readiness. The technical analysis covered 21 pages across 10 representative page templates and reviewed AI crawler accessibility, indexability, JavaScript dependency, content extractability, page and section structure, metadata, structured data, machine-readable freshness signals and technical page performance. The analysis identified a number of opportunities affecting how easily individual pages and passages could be understood, extracted and reused by AI systems.
5
Improved technical GEO accessibility
Technical accessibility issues identified during the work were addressed to create a stronger foundation for AI discovery and retrieval. The latest technical check confirmed that the website was fully open to the measured AI crawler set. AI crawler access reached 100%, all sampled pages were indexable and the core content of the tested pages was available without requiring JavaScript rendering. This meant that basic accessibility was no longer the main technical constraint.
6
Continued improving citation readiness
With the access layer in place, the next stage focused further down the retrieval process. The technical analysis identified additional opportunities around content extractability, page structure, machine-readable dates, metadata, structured data and page performance. These findings created a more detailed GEO roadmap for making the company's authoritative website content easier for AI systems to retrieve and cite.
7
Used each monitoring round to refine the programme
Each new monitoring round was used to identify where visibility and citation presence were increasing and where gaps remained. As the company became more visible, the focus of the work evolved from establishing AI search presence toward strengthening visibility across individual therapeutic areas and increasing first-party citation coverage.
HIGH LEVEL OUTLOOK
From Minimal Visibility to a 45% Mention Rate
Across five monitoring rounds over four months, the company moved from only isolated appearances in AI-generated answers to consistent visibility across the monitored query set.
The early rounds produced only one or two brand mentions.
By the latest monitoring, the company recorded 76 individual mentions and appeared in 45% of the monitored AI-generated answers.
Visibility also expanded across multiple therapeutic segments rather than remaining limited to a single area.
This represented a substantial change from the starting position and established a much stronger AI search presence for the company.
Brand Visibility and First-Party Citations Both Increased
The monitoring also showed progress beyond brand mentions alone.
As the company appeared in more AI-generated answers, its own website also began appearing more frequently among the cited sources.
This is important because brand visibility and first-party citation visibility represent two different parts of AI search presence.
The first shows whether AI systems recognise the company as relevant to a question. The second shows whether the company's own content is strong and accessible enough to help support the answer itself.
Both increased over the monitoring period.
The latest results therefore provide a stronger foundation for the next stage of the programme: continuing to increase overall visibility while also growing the share of answers supported directly by company-owned content.
What Changed
The programme started with minimal AI search visibility and only isolated brand mentions.
After five monitoring rounds over four months, the company reached a 45% Mention Rate and 76 individual mentions in the latest monitored answer set.
First-party citation visibility increased alongside brand presence, showing that the company's own website was also becoming a more active part of the AI search ecosystem.
Technical GEO work strengthened the website foundation further, bringing measured AI crawler access to 100% and ensuring that sampled pages were indexable and their core content directly accessible.
The programme is ongoing.
The current focus is on continuing the same trajectory: expanding visibility across the five monitored therapeutic segments, increasing the use of company-owned content as an AI source and continuing technical and content improvements based on each new monitoring round.
